چکیده

The project “Developing Policies and Adaptation Strategies to Climate Change in the Baltic Sea Region” (AS TRA) assesses regional vulnerabilities to climate change and aims for developing adaptation options. To de termine whether the participating municipalities are prepared to climate change, this study investigates stake holder perspectives and knowledge in multiple case studies. Based on a qualitative survey, institutions perceived to be relevant as well as climate change impacts and exposure units were collected. Institutional failures are identified. While factors constraining adaptation are found more on the local level, enabling factors are seen at higher levels. Most importantly, climate change is not a priority issue on the municipal level. Respondents have difficulties in identifying concrete susceptibilities and response options, leaving the impression that many muni cipalities are not prepared to climate change. This is due to uncertainties, but also to missing frames of refer ence, indicating that many municipalities are at an early stage of awareness. Current priorities should be given to knowledge transfer and communication processes. The study further indicates that most actions happen on the mitigation part. This contradicts state-of-the art theory on adaptation such that the study gives impulses for future research.

Climate change in the Baltic sea region: a cross-country analysis of institutional stakeholder perceptions.

Before climate change is considered in long-term coastal management, it is necessary to investigate how institutional stakeholders in coastal management conceptualize climate change, as their awareness will ultimately affect their actions. Using questionnaires in eight Baltic Sea riparian countries, this study examines environmental managers' awareness of climate change. Our results indicate th...

Scientific Support by the BONUS+ Projects for the Sustainability of the Baltic Sea Region: The Case of the HELCOM Baltic Sea Action Plan

The synthesis of the BONUS+ research is introduced. The HELCOM Baltic Sea Action Plan is examined as a case to illustrate the potentials and challenges in building the science-policy making interface on a macro regional level. The projects address environmental challenges in the Baltic Sea as defined by the Baltic Sea Action Plan, or consider the environmental governance and decision making wit...

Circulation of the Baltic Sea and its connection to the Pan-Arctic region — a large scale and high-resolution modeling approach

The Baltic Sea has traditionally been considered as a semi-enclosed marginal sea with little or no inß uence on the adjacent oceans. We employ an eddy-permitting, coupled ice-ocean model of the Pan-Arctic region to study the Baltic Sea, especially its circulation and property exchanges with the North Sea and other regions. Using this high-resolution and large scale model we focus here on the fr...

Echoes from the Past: A Healthy Baltic Sea Requires More Effort

Integrated sediment multiproxy studies and modeling were used to reconstruct past changes in the Baltic Sea ecosystem. Results of natural changes over the past 6000 years in the Baltic Sea ecosystem suggest that forecasted climate warming might enhance environmental problems of the Baltic Sea. Integrated modeling and sediment proxy studies reveal increased sea surface temperatures and expanded ...

Climate change effects on the Baltic Sea borderland between land and sea

Coastal habitats are situated on the border between land and sea, and ecosystem structure and functioning is influenced by both marine and terrestrial processes. Despite this, most scientific studies and monitoring are conducted either with a terrestrial or an aquatic focus. To address issues concerning climate change impacts in coastal areas, a cross-ecosystem approach is necessary. Since habi...
